On view now in the second-floor galleries, “Wall” is an inventive survey of artwork from the permanent collection featuring 30 works by 28 artists, created over a 53-year timespan (1964-2017) anchored in the 20th and 21st centuries. The exhibition鈥檚 namesake, 鈥淲all,鈥� is a nod to Robert Indiana鈥檚 large-scale industrial print that is on display. 鈥淲all鈥� is also a reminder that, although ubiquitous and seemingly mundane, walls have multiple sides that represent many things. They construct spaces that literally function but also symbolize the ideas of 鈥渋nside vs. outside鈥� and 鈥渇ree vs. confined.鈥� Across three gallery spaces, the Appleton curatorial team juxtaposed the works to create dynamic groupings that illustrate how artists push the limits of medium, line, form, texture and color to communicate with audiences.

鈥淭he exhibition showcases newly acquired gifts to the collection alongside visitor favorites,鈥� noted Appleton Director Jason Steuber. 鈥淲e invite everyone to come spend time with these world-class works that grace the gallery walls. Born in the 19th and 20th centuries, the artists included in 鈥淲all鈥� hail from Belarus, Canada, Cuba, France, Greece, Spain, Ukraine and United States, embracing a wide range of media and techniques. Opening in the museum鈥檚 Balcony Gallery for Florida Artists, “Common Thread” is a comprehensive anthology showcasing the work of Segal. This career-spanning collection of photographs delves into a subject she knows well: her native state, Florida. The exhibition features a diverse array of subjects, from the formal gardens of Vizcaya in Miami to the storage spaces of the Lightner Museum in St. Augustine. Whether she is exploring historic buildings and neighborhoods, parks or rural landscapes, Segal’s aesthetic remains both intimate and singular.

Also included are black-and-white gelatin silver prints from a collaborative photography project exploring Baracoa, Cuba. Shot on film using a medium format camera, the photos were exhibited in Havana, then traveled throughout the state of Florida in 2005, and are now part of the Appleton鈥檚 permanent collection.

Following photography鈥檚 progression from film to digital methods, Segal鈥檚 images retain a common vision. Much of her influences come from the Southern Gothic genre and she embraces the tropes with a darkly romantic approach. While her photographs are often symmetrically composed within a clinically square composition, they have a timeless, surreal quality. The act of photographing is of particular significance, which she views as 鈥渁n occasion for quiet contemplation and opportunity to connect and create 鈥� it鈥檚 as much an expression as it is a meditation.鈥�

Segal was born in St. Augustine, Florida, where she attended Flagler College and later taught photography in the same classroom where she had discovered her love of the medium. She studied photography at the Southeast Center for Photography at Daytona State College and the University of North Florida. The artist has received numerous grants for her work including several Individual Artist Grants from the Community Foundation of Northeast Florida, the Florida Department of State and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her work has been exhibited widely across the state of Florida.

Infrastructure is in place and construction has started on the $20 million capital expansion project, with funding provided by the Florida Legislature, Marion County Hospital District and Marion County Commission.

The two-story, 42,500-gross-square-foot building will include six classrooms, three skills labs, six simulation exam rooms and a testing lab. It will serve 325 Nursing students in associate and bachelor鈥檚 degree programs. The first classes are expected to be offered in the building in January 2025.

In spring 2023, CF received a $6.7 million Linking Industry to Nursing Education grant from the Florida Legislature to expand its nursing program. CF鈥檚 Associate Degree Nursing program was named the 2023 Best RN Program in Florida by RegisteredNursing.org.

On June 13, CF transferred 12 hospital beds and 17 high-tech simulators, valued at $67,000, to MCPS. The electric beds allow students to learn on equipment used in hospitals. The Laerdal VitalSim-enabled manikins simulate heart, breath and bowel sounds, helping students learn to take vital signs and blood pressure readings as well as other basic nursing skills.

The donation was made possible after CF received grant funds through the Florida Department of Education LINE grant, created by the Florida Legislature, which allowed the college to purchase new simulators to be used by nursing students.

鈥淭his is the ripple effect of funding,鈥� said Dr. Jim Henningsen, CF president. 鈥淏ecause of the tremendous support 香蕉视频 received from the Florida Legislature and the Citrus County Hospital Board, who provided the initial investment to be matched by the state, we can now gift this training equipment to Marion County Public Schools. We鈥檙e excited to help younger students interested in health care careers get an earlier start with hands-on learning.鈥�

The simulators and hospital beds will be distributed to five MCPS high schools: Belleview, Lake Weir, North Marion, Vanguard and West Port, as well as six middle schools: Dunnellon, Fort King, Horizon Academy at Marion Oaks, Howard, Liberty and North Marion.
