The �㽶��Ƶ will host the 31^st Annual Early Childhood Conference in partnership with the Early Learning Coalition of Marion County Saturday, March 30, at its Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

The conference will be held from 7:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Ewers Century Center. Registration is $40 before Feb. 25, then $60 after.

Attendees can participate in sessions and discover ideas to enhance children social and emotional development and participate in meaningful learning activities.

Keynote speaker is Lillian Hubler, founder and president of Time to Sign Inc. Hubler is known for her effective sign language training for educators of young children. Featured presenters are Dr. Michael Hubler speaking on “Ways to Promote Social and Emotional Learning” and Adrienne Donaldson presenting “Today I’m Chatty, Tomorrow I’m in my Feelings.”

The �㽶��Ƶ’s Visual and Performing Arts Department will present  two spring  lectures this month. “Music and the Brain” will be presented by local neurologist José Gaudier, M.D., P.A. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the Charles R. Dassance Fine Arts Center. “Anyone Can Improvise” on Wednesday, Feb. 27, will feature Greg Snider, CF clarinet and saxophone instructor and Patriot Blues Jazz Band director, and will take place in the Webber Center, 3001 S.W. College Road, Ocala. Both lectures start at 12:30 p.m.

Gaudier is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is also a member of the American Academy of Neurology, American Medical Association, Florida Medical Association and Marion County Medical Association. He has been instrumental in bringing to Ocala a number of medical educational programs for physicians and has participated in a large number of research projects helping bring cutting edge technology to Ocala. For his work in the Medical Society of Marion County, he was named vice president of the organization in 2006-2007 and president in 2007-2008. In his passion to educate others, Gaudier has lectured patients and colleagues on various neurological topics. In addition, he has co-authored of several articles.

Snider recently was awarded a Master of Music Education with a focus on Jazz Studies at the University of Florida. Prior to that he completed a Master of Music in Saxophone Performance at UF. In conjunction with his teaching schedule, Snider performs multiple styles of music on the saxophone ranging from classical works to pop charts and jazz and can be seen playing regularly in the Gainesville and Ocala communities.

�㽶��Ƶ students won numerous awards for CF’s student newspaper and literary magazines last week at the Florida College System Publications Association awards banquet in Tampa.

The Patriot Press, CF’s student newspaper, placed fifth in the Newspaper division. Co-Editor-in-Chief Delaney Van Nest placed second in the News Story division for “RU OK,” CF’s Suicide Prevention program, in the August 2017 issue. Van Nest also placed third in the Sports Photo division for the CF Softball Team photo in the February 2018 issue, and third in the On-the-Spot photo contest. Current Sports Editor Zach Grinstead placed third in the Sports Column division for “Student Athletes and Sexual Assault” in the March 2018 issue. Former Editor-in-Chief, Katelyn James placed third in the Humor Writing division for her satirical column “Tips to Freshmen” in the April 2018 issue.

In the Write Mind, CF Citrus Campus literary magazine, placed second in the magazine division for overall photography. Students April Howell, Meghan Williamson and Julia Brodmerkel were awarded second place in photography. Jazzy Philipson won third place in the Artwork category for her painting of a saxophone player, while Isabella Witkowich won first place for her photograph entered in the On the Spot photo contest.

Imprints, CF Ocala Campus literary magazine, and CF student William Andrews received first place in the Cover category, William Andrews, Nathalya Reyes and Elizabeth Hinde received first place in Two-Page Spread category, and first place went to the Imprints staff for General Excellence, which is the overall accumulation of points in each category. Several second place awards were also given in the following categories: Poetry went to Victoria Thacker, Prince Quamin and Gary Pealer; Fiction went to Anna Howes; Art Works went to Raul Colmenares, Carlos Ramos and Hannah Newman; Contents Page went to Williams Andrews; and Editing and Staff Page went to the Imprints staff.

CF Associate Professor of Communications Rob Marino was also re-elected to serve as president of the Florida College System Publications Association. This is Marino’s sixth year serving as FCSPA president during the last 13 years.

The Florida College System Publications Association brings students and advisors together to provide a common ground for discussion of publications and mass media. The association provides responsible guidance to student publications to ensure their growth as a medium for the education of future citizens of a free society and to obtain the best thinking on problems in publications and mass communications and to share this thinking.

�㽶��Ƶ will offer an Advanced Welding Technologies Certificate program starting in the fall that focuses on pipe welding and provides an opportunity to earn three additional high-skill certifications in the pipe welding process.

Students who have completed CF’s Welding program or students who have completed another welding program and can demonstrate the skills necessary for the advanced process through certification are eligible. The program can be completed in one and half semesters, if attending full time.

�㽶��Ƶ will offer an eight-week Timber Harvesting Equipment program May 6 through June 27 at the Jack Wilkinson Levy Campus, 15390 N.W. Highway 19, Chiefland. Classes meet Monday through Thursday in the morning for the first five weeks and then for a full day the last three weeks.

The program is open to 12 students and includes classroom instruction and field trips to local logging companies and mills. Students will receive OSHA-10 and CPR certification. Upon completion of five weeks, students will be registered for the Master Logger Certification course and exam. The final three weeks of the program will include on-site training and cover harvesting a section of timber donated by the Florida Forestry Association using a skidder, fellow-buncher and loader. Support is offered through industry partnerships with Usher Land and Timber, Loncala Inc. and the Florida Department of Forestry.

Due to a generous scholarship, students can attend the program for free. The program includes all assessments required for registration, textbooks, fees, personal protective equipment and tuition. Students must be at least 18 years old to participate. Deadline to submit an application is Friday, April 19.

The �㽶��Ƶ Corporate College is partnering with the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce to provide training monthly for local businesses, industry, nonprofit and government entities to address specific management and employee needs. Each interactive, two-hour workshop will provide practical and useful tips, tools and techniques that attendees can start using right away to improve skills for success.

Each workshop will be offered twice a month at the Citrus Learning and Conference Center at the Citrus Campus, 3800 S. Lecanto Highway, Lecanto; Citrus County Chamber of Commerce, 915 N. Suncoast Blvd., Crystal River; or the Citrus County Building Alliance, 1196 S. Lecanto Highway, Lecanto. Workshops are $29 each.

Workshops include advanced leadership, community knowledge, customer service, cybersecurity, basic supervision, business networking, goal-setting and accountability, human resources basics, managing for success, marketing, and social media.

The �㽶��Ƶ’s International Film Series wraps up the 2018-2019 season with “Omar” on Tuesday, Feb. 12, “Selma” on Tuesday, Feb. 26, and “Wadjda” on March 5. Shows start at 2 p.m. at the Appleton Museum and at 7 p.m. at the Ocala Campus in the Humanities and Social Sciences Building 8, Room 110.

• “Omar” is about a Palestinian baker who is arrested after the death of an Israeli soldier and agrees to work as an informant. This film is in Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles. It is not rated and has a total run time of 98 minutes.
• “Selma” is a true story that chronicles a three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. This film is English and is rated PG-13. It has a total run time of 125 minutes.
• “Wadjda” is the first feature film directed by a woman in Saudi Arabia, Haifaa al-Mansour, who tells the touching story of Wadjda, a 10 year old struggling with the restrictions placed on her by religion and tradition. The CF International Film Series presents this film in honor of International Women’s Day. This film is in Arabic with English subtitles. It is rated PG-13 and has a total run time of 95 minutes.

Viewings are free at CF. Series membership, which includes fall and spring screenings at the Appleton Museum of Art, is $15 for individuals, $25 for dual membership and includes a bonus film each year. The Appleton Museum of Art, �㽶��Ƶ, will loan an important Orientalist work from the permanent collection, “Odalisque” by Jean-Léon Gérôme.

In late February, the small but exquisite painting will travel to the Museum Marmottan Monet, located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris with over 300 Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings by Claude Monet. In 1966, Michel Monet, the painter’s second son, bequeathed his property in Giverny to the French Academy of Fine Arts and his collection of paintings, inherited from his father, to the Museum Marmottan Monet. This donation endowed the museum with the largest Monet collection in the world.

The Appleton’s “Odalisque” will be part of a special exhibition entitled, “L’Orient des peintres, du rêve à la lumière,” organized by guest curator Emmanuelle Amiot-Saulnier. On view March 7-July 21, the show will feature 60 masterpieces from the most important public and private collections in Europe and the United States, such as Musée du Louvre and Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The comprehensive exhibition aims to reveal a new look at Orientalist painting and the birth of modern art.
