The donor, Frances Lowe, was a resident of Inverness. Lowe had a passion for education expressed by her interest to help future generations achieve their dreams of becoming nurses. Staff from the CF Foundation met with her and her advisor to discuss how the Foundation may help her achieve her goal. After a tour of the 㽶Ƶ’s Citrus Campus nursing lab and a few more conversations, Lowe committed to create the endowed nursing scholarship at CF through a generous gift through her will.

Lowe passed away in September 2019 with an intent to help others well into the future through education.

“This generous planned gift will provide much needed scholarship opportunities for nursing students attending CF,” said Chris Knife, executive director, CF Foundation.

If you are interested in providing a legacy gift to the 㽶Ƶ, one way to do so is to include the CF Foundation in your will. Planned gifts help ensure that students will have the necessary funds to transform their lives through education. For more information about including the CF Foundation in your will, contact Traci Mason, masont@CF.edu or 352-873-5808, or visit .

Food items are for Marion County residents and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants will be asked to show their IDs. Volunteers will place food items in vehicle trunks to maintain social distancing. Entrance to the drive-through distribution will be at the main entrance of the college at College Road and S.W. 26th Street, across from the Paddock Mall. Other entrances will be blocked off. Approximately 500 families will receive food through the distribution.

“It is an honor to work with Sen. Perry to provide a convenient location and volunteers to distribute food through Food Share during this trying time. It is important that we work together as a community to meet the needs of our Marion County residents” said Dr. Jim Henningsen, president of the 㽶Ƶ.

“Florida families are facing unprecedented challenges, and the last thing they should have to worry about is the ability to put food on their tables,” said Perry (R-Gainesville). “Thank you, Farm Share, 㽶Ƶ and volunteers for coming together to help support our community.”

Farm Share is a nonprofit organization based in Jacksonville founded to distribute fresh food free of charge to families, children, seniors and individuals in need throughout Florida. It delivers more than 88 million pounds of healthy and nutritious food each year.

This year, the Appleton is asking for photos that reflect how you found peace or joy in isolation over the past few months. Whether you were alone or with family, whether you preferred to garden, binge-watch “Tiger King” or perfect your culinary skills, each of our daily lives looked very different during this global, shared experience.

All ages are invited to participate; each person may submit up to two photos. Photos must be taken with a mobile phone, fit the theme and be tasteful in content.

Instructions for Participation:

Submitting Your Photos

Now through June 28, email your mobile photos to AppletonMuseum@cf.edu. Photos must be sent via email and will not be accepted through Facebook or other social media. If you send more than two photos, your entries will not be accepted.

What Happens Next?

On July 5, all photos will be uploaded to the Appleton  where the public will have a chance to vote until July 19 for their favorite.

Photography-related prizes will be awarded to the photo with the most “Likes” on Facebook, and to one photo selected by our guest judge, Dr. Saul Reyes, who is a photographer and vice president for Student Affairs at 㽶Ƶ. Winning photos will be featured on Appleton social media accounts and in the fall issue of “Artifacts” magazine.

The two winners will be announced on July 20 and will also be contacted via email to arrange pick-up or shipping of their prize.

“Since the pandemic started many artists, designers and makers have jumped in to use their creative skills to make masks and Personal Protective Equipment to address the needs of health care workers on the front lines, grocery store workers, and other essential personnel,” said Tyrus Clutter, associate professor of Visual Art. “This exhibit is a way to recognize their hard work and innovation.”

Images, ideas or proposals can be emailed to Paul Shortt at shorttp@CF.edu by Tuesday, June 30. The gallery can provide return shipping for accepted materials and can print some images in house to keep costs low.

The 㽶Ƶ, the Ocala/Marion County Chamber & Economic Partnership and the Ocala/Marion County Visitors and Convention Bureau have released the findings of a survey on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the local economy. The COVID-19 Business Impact Survey was distributed by the CEP from April 13-23. The survey was designed to allow business executives to voice their concerns about the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on their business.

The inspiration for the survey came from Florida Gulf Coast University’s work with its local chamber of commerce organizations in the southwest Florida region. Abraham Mathew, CF assistant professor of Business, Technology and Career and Technical Education, created the survey with the help of Dr. Christopher Westley, the lead researcher on the FGCU project. The Tourist Development Council was responsible for bringing CF and FGCU together to share the expertise that subsequently allowed the survey to be expedited and deployed in the Ocala/Marion County area.

Most of the survey respondents were small businesses in industries such as restaurant, construction, health care and manufacturing. Surveys were completed by 199 businesses, and results were compiled and analyzed by Mathew. Overall results showed:

  • 87% of respondents said that customer demand in their business had declined as a result of COVID-19, with just over half reporting that customer demand had declined over 50%.
  • The vast majority of companies (67%) laid off or reduced work hours for less than 20% of their employees.
  • More than 80% of the respondents felt that the impact would not have any “permanent adverse effects.”
  • 85% of the respondents were owners, CEOs, or key decision-makers.

“This is a great snapshot of how businesses responded to the pandemic,” said Kevin Sheilley, president and CEO of the CEP. “And while there was certainly plenty of disruption in Ocala, the resiliency of our local businesses will be on full display in the months to come.”

The full results of the survey can be found at . The Community Foundation for Ocala/Marion County conducted a similar survey aimed at measuring the impact on the nonprofit community. The results of that survey can be found at .

A follow-up survey involving the same group of community partners will be conducted in six months. Sheilley will be the spokesperson for this survey, with planned presentations in the coming weeks for Ocala City Council, Marion County Board of Commissioners, and the TDC Board. Additional entities or businesses interested in having Sheilley present should call 352-629-8051, ext. 105.
